Where Entomology Meets Entrepreneurship

It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of our days. I think back to when my first child was born, and I heard a saying: "long days and short weeks." It was so true in those early days. There's another saying I've heard since: "life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes." Life gets busy. Work gets busy. It always seems like there's never enough time.
An Invitation That Made Me Think
Insects Limited has always been involved in our community. It's not uncommon for us to host Boy Scout or Brownie troops, home school programs, or after-school groups at our facility. Our business is unique — and honestly, kind of entertaining, so when I was asked to host the Westfield Rotary Club at our Center for Stored Product Protection to talk about how we marry entomology and entrepreneurship, I said yes. It took a while to find time on the schedule. Little did I know I was preparing a short presentation I'd end up hoping to give many more times.
That conversation reconfirmed something for me: it's not just our products that make Insects Limited unique. It's the way we think.
Science Isn't the End of the Work, It's the Starting Pistol
Entomology is commonly (or uncommonly) known as the scientific study of insects. That's true, but we believe science has a much greater purpose. At Insects Limited, science isn't the end of our work, it's where the starting pistol goes off.
Our purpose is to help protect the world's food and cherished belongings from damage by insect pests. Accomplishing that mission takes far more than understanding insect biology or behavior. It requires understanding the needs of our customers, asking meaningful scientific questions, developing practical solutions, educating the industry, and continually improving how we support the people who rely on us.
Over the last year, we've spent considerable time identifying, creating, and documenting what we call The Insects Limited Way, our six Core Processes that describe how value flows through our company. Everything begins with scientific discovery. We conduct research and observe insect behavior to generate practical insights. Those insights become educational resources, product innovations, customer conversations, and ultimately, solutions that help protect food and cherished belongings around the world.
Enter Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is usually associated with starting companies or launching new products. We see it a little differently. We believe entrepreneurship is recognizing opportunities to create value. Sometimes that opportunity is a pheromone lure. Other times it's a better monitoring system. Outside of products, entrepreneurship can simply mean answering a scientific question our customers didn't even know to ask.
Our strengths as a company have always been science, education, innovation, and quality pheromone products, but these aren't independent of one another. They build on each other. Science produces knowledge. Education shares that knowledge. Innovation transforms knowledge into practical solutions. Quality pheromone products let customers confidently apply those solutions in their own facilities.
Throughout the days that feel like a whirlwind, we've realized that when these strengths work together, something powerful happens. We aren't selling products as just another commodity, we're helping customers become more successful. That's why businesses and individuals partner with Insects Limited.
The Intersection
This is ultimately what I shared with the Rotary Club: Insects Limited exists at the intersection of entomology and entrepreneurship because we believe the greatest value science can create isn't just new knowledge, it's knowledge that improves people's work, protects valuable resources, and helps solve real-world problems.
As we continue building the future of Insects Limited, our commitment stays the same: ask better scientific questions, generate meaningful insights, and translate those insights into practical solutions that protect the world's food and cherished belongings from damage by insect pests.
