Sometimes Success Isn't Enough: The Story of SightTrap

Innovation isn't always measured by sales. Sometimes it's measured by what you learn, the problems you solve, and the foundation you leave behind.

Several years ago, our team at Insects Limited set out to answer a question that many in stored-product pest management had been asking: what if pheromone monitoring could happen automatically? The result was SightTrap, a camera-based pheromone monitoring system that automatically photographed sticky traps and transmitted images to the cloud, where insects could be identified and counted without a technician standing in front of the trap.

Technically, It Worked. Commercially, It Didn't.

Developing SightTrap took years of engineering, software development, field testing, and real financial investment. We believed then — and still believe now, that increasing monitoring frequency while reducing manual labor is an important step forward for Integrated Pest Management.

Technically, SightTrap delivered. But technology alone isn't enough. Like a lot of innovations, widespread adoption never came. Without enough users, the ongoing cost of maintaining cloud infrastructure, software updates, and technical support couldn't be justified. As difficult as it was, we made the decision to discontinue the product. That decision was disappointing, because we knew the technology worked.

Independent Research Just Proved We Were Right

Now, independent research has reinforced that belief. A recently published study by researchers from the USDA Agricultural Research Service and Kansas State University used the SightTrap platform to evaluate automated monitoring of Indian meal moths under real-world storage conditions. Researchers analyzed 1,739 trap images collected in commercial-like environments and found the system achieved 95.8% overall classification accuracy, maintaining high precision and recall even when insects overlapped or traps contained debris and non-target insects.

It's worth noting the automation evaluated in this study ran outside of the ForesightIPM platform, the research was assessing the capabilities of the SightTrap hardware and imaging technology itself. It demonstrated the system's ability to continuously track moth population changes over time while cutting image analysis time by more than 90% compared with manual inspection.

The researchers concluded that image-based monitoring can provide reliable, high-resolution population data, improve monitoring consistency, catch population changes that traditional inspection schedules might miss, and support earlier, more informed pest management decisions.

These images are pulled directly from a SightTrap deployment, each card shows what the camera captured over a period of days, automatically logging new insects, their type, and distinguishing details like wing scales or debris, without anyone needing to walk the floor and check a trap by hand.

Rather than replacing pheromone trapping, automated monitoring like this is meant to complement existing IPM programs, making monitoring more frequent, more objective, and more data-driven than a manual check ever could be.

The Idea Didn't Die. It Evolved.

We're proud that researchers chose SightTrap as the platform for their work. The commercial product may no longer be available, but the ideas behind it continue to move the industry forward. Every innovation, whether it becomes a commercial hit or not, adds to our understanding of how better monitoring can improve pest management.

At Insects Limited, innovation has always been part of who we are. Not every project becomes a commercial success, but every project teaches us something valuable. Those lessons shape the products we build today and inspire the ones we'll build tomorrow.

Sometimes the market isn't ready. Sometimes the technology arrives before the industry catches up. And sometimes, years later, independent research reminds you the idea was a good one all along.

The spirit of SightTrap hasn't been discontinued, it lives on through our ongoing work with Skyhawk on the Trapmate InsectaDetector and the Trapmate InsectaVision. Progress has been quiet, but it's still happening. We're continuing to work closely with the Skyhawk team to take what we learned from SightTrap and put it into two products that will impact this industry more than most people realize.
